United for Peace and Human Rights: Safe Homes for All

October 17 is a day of solidarity and hope. Today our voices, in all their differing beauty and tones, rise as one to honour the millions of people whose lives were taken by extreme poverty, and to salute the living, who rise each day with courage and dignity against every obstacle placed in their path. Let us say it plainly: poverty is not a personal failure. It is built, brick by brick, by wrong policy choices, by unequal power, by discrimination, and it stands alongside extreme wealth and widening inequality.

This year, we turn to the place where dignity begins: the home. A home is not four walls and a roof. It is where fear is left at the door, and a person can simply be, safe, seen, and whole. Safety within, and beyond. Yet more than 3.4 billion people live without adequate shelter. 1.16 billion crowd into informal settlements. At least 330 million have no home at all. Without a safe home, every other right, health, school, work, belonging, slips out of reach. When land and housing become investments instead of rights, families are pushed into the shadows of unsafe, overcrowded, precarious lives, not by choice, but by systems that have failed them.

Fifty years after Vancouver, sixty years after the covenants that promised these rights to every human being, we say again: human rights are not aspirations. They are binding commitments. We call on governments to:

  • Make safe homes and a life in dignity and peace for all a priority, in every policy, every budget.
  • Build policies together with people living in poverty, not for them, they are rights holders and knowledge holders both.
  • Tax excessive wealth; let it build roofs and pillars of fundamental rights, not fortunes for the few.

Let us be steadfastly united for peace and human rights, for peace is not the mere absence of war, but justice, protection, and the freedom to live without fear and without humiliation. Let us answer, once more, the call carved in stone since 1987:

“Wherever men and women are condemned to live in extreme poverty, human rights are violated. To come together to ensure that these rights be respected is our solemn duty.”

Whatever stands before us, together, we overcome.
