Answer: All people are called upon to mark the Day, keeping in mind the spirit of the Day. You can download the international charter of October 17 to know what the Day is and what it is not.

Answer: We cannot give material or economic support for the events. Each person and association organises the 17 October events with their own means, and in particular seeks the participation of people who are themselves living in poverty.

And by developing the network of those who want to show their refusal of misery by gathering on the occasion of this world meeting.


Why do we sometimes speak about the World Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty and sometimes about the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty ?

Answer : On 17 October 1987, Joseph Wresinski, ATD Fourth World Movement’s founder, called on defenders of human and civil rights from all countries to gather. More than a hundred thousand people responded to this call. Together they celebrate the first World Day to Overcome Extreme Poverty. In 1992, the United Nations recognised 17 October as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, which has since been commemorated around the world.


Why do we keep both names ?

Answer : Keeping these two names of the 17th of October reminds us how this International Day born in 1987. Joseph Wresinski and the members of the ATD Fourth World Movement brought the conviction that poverty is a violation of Human Rights and they call to unite to overcome it launched.
