Warsaw, Kielce - Wednesday 17 October 2018 - Marking the World Day in Poland

In Poland, cultural events to mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty were held in Kielce and in Warsaw. The main purpose of these events was to draw attention to the existence of poverty and social exclusion, and to emphasize the need for solidarity and friendship with people affected by poverty, so as to work together to successfully overcome poverty.

In Warsaw, a theatre drama performed by people who were homeless was organised by the Oratory Theatre, the Homeless Theatre and ATD Fourth World at the Oratorium Theatre. The performance, directed by Anna Szufa, was an adaptation of Marta Guśniowska's play, "A Fairy Tale about an Enchanted Teapot", a humorous story about the need for self-fulfilment. The Homeless Theatre is a project in which homeless people take part in theatrical activities, and is organized in cooperation with the Warsaw Oratorium Theatre.

After the play, the audience members met with the actors and viewed the exhibition, "Hear the Fourth World", which presented the international activity of the ATD Fourth World movement, and took part in a joint artistic project entitled "Thinking about tomorrow."

We share here with you some photographs from these events.

In addition, a conference entitled "Society without the Poor" was held at the Staszic Palace at which the participants talked about the social consequences of poverty and discussed how to combat it effectively.

In Kielce, people who were homeless, representatives of the city authority, employees of the Municipal Centre for Family Assistance, representatives of social services and volunteers paid tribute to people who are resisting poverty all over the world. The participants visited places of significance to the issue of poverty, such as the Human Rights Board and the Homeless Cross next to the PKP railway building.

After common prayers in front of the cross, on which small wooden boards with the names of deceased homeless people were placed, the participants visited the Senior Club at 3 Urzędnicza Street where a Mass was held for the people in poverty and social issues were discussed.
