International Committee for October 17: Appointment of Jyoti Tuladhar
February 4, 2O16, Pierrelaye, France—We are pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs. Jyoti Tuladhar to the International Committee for October 17. The Committee was established in 2008 to promote and support the observance of the World Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty, observed on October 17th each year, which is recognised as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty by the United Nations.
“I am delighted to welcome Jyoti as a member of the Committee,” said Donald Lee, President of the International Committee. “Her commitment to fight poverty through the promotion of gender equality and the economic empowerment of women in Nepal, in particular, has been impressive and has highlighted the need to support the important role of women in decision making at all levels. Her vast experience, which includes many years as an expert in the International Labour Organization, as well as her commitment to women’s rights will strengthen the Committee’s capacity to promote the spirit of October 17.”
Jyoti Tuladhar is an international consultant from Nepal, based in Portugal. She has worked at the policy and field level on women’s empowerment and development issues since 1990. She served as a gender expert with the International Labour Organization between 1999 and 2010 where she concentrated on promoting a Participatory Gender Audit Methodology Tool. Prior to joining the International Labour Organization, she worked on strengthening the capacity of local organizations/NGOs to deliver micro-credit to rural women in 28 districts of Nepal. She has taught in academic institutions in Nepal and the United States.
